Entry 4

When this class first started, I was not entirely sure what to expect. Once we got into the first chapter, I got a full understanding that this was going to be about our students who are learning English as a second language. Not so much how to teach them but how to understand what they go through when learning. I think as teachers it is important that we try to put ourselves in our students’ shoes. Something may seem so simple to us, but their brain is not like ours right now. We had to go through challenges and frustrating moments too like they are going through. But specifically, with our ESL students it can be harder to imagine unless we have gone through that experience in the past. I think this class will help me in the future when I teach ESL to think about what I can do to help. I have gone through ESL classes when I was in Elementary, but even then, I do not recall everything that I went through.
Ortega (2013) mentioned in her book about foreign accents being detected by the untrained ear. I would have liked to have heard more about this in the area of those who learn multiple languages but have no accent. I have a great Aunt who knows five languages and learned them through tapes but speaks them with no accent. She speaks as if she was from the country of that language. I would have liked to learn about as to why that may happen. Ortega (2013) also mentioned a story about Betsy Rymes who became more involved in the classroom when they talked about things he knew. I would have liked to touch more on this and how as a teacher we can help a student more with this. I know she mentioned about meaningful conversations but most of the time teachers have to give instruction. I would like to have heard her input on what strategies teachers can use to make the curriculum meaningful to these students who need something like Betsy Rymes to get involved.
I surprisingly enjoyed making the vblogs. When having to think of questions to ask the person I was thinking of interviewing and connecting it to the material I thought of things that I may not have before. Having to form the questions took my thinking of the material to another level I feel. As opposed to simply reading and understanding the basic point, I thought about how I could take what I read and transfer that thinking to the classroom. Then being able to here back on the answers to my questions was helpful. The answers made me think back to what I had read. Often the answers reflected what the material said. It was like a cycle, I thought back to the material twice each time with a slightly different perspective.
Being able to comment with my peers helped the most in my opinion. I found myself understanding some of the material a bit better. Sometimes a peer would include a citation in an area that I skimmed over because I was not in complete understanding of what was being said. But because they used it in their response, I was able to read it from a different perspective. I also enjoyed getting to read different opinions on the material as well. This class makes you think and reflect about the different areas that affect learning a second language.

  1. Hi Alessandra! I find it interesting that you were in ESL classes yourself in elementary school. I think that that allows you to relate at least a little bit with students who may be going through the same thing when you are a teacher. I agree with you in the fact that this class has taught us a lot about how to understand students who are learning a second language and what their brains are going through. I also agree with you that making the vlogs this semester was an interesting and effective way to reinforce the knowledge we were gaining from the textbooks.

    1. Hi Marissa!

When reading Alessandra's reflection I agreed with a lot that you expressed. I feel also that her personal experiences from when she was in ESL courses is going to be a benefit for her students because she will be able to relate to them. This class has taught us so much on how to appropriately and effectively cater to the needs of our students classified as ELL. As far as the blogs I feel the same and that it was such an amazing platform for us to further express ourselves and share our experiences with our peers. I feel this whole experience allowed for us to view second language acquisition in multiple perspectives.

    2. Hi Marissa! I think so too. Their experience may be different from mind but I will understand their frustration when it comes to learning and practicing. Ortega (2013) touched on areas such as motivation, feedback and even making the learning meaningful like Betsy Rymes. I think this explains and gives future teachers tools to further help our students. I would have liked more of a how to apply in the classroom with the content but I think that connection may happen in field with experience. I think the vlogs just really helped me look at the reading in another perspective because sometimes I did not completely understand the text.

    3. Hi Alyssa! I would have like some in classroom examples or maybe like a case study where they explain what the teacher does, but I think this class has given us the tools and when we apply them in the field the experience will help us along the way to improve how we use the tools. The area that I think I will use the most is where Ortega (2013) mentions Betsy Rymes and making the class more meaningful for him when they talked about something he knew. I think this is important for any student not just ESL and ELL. Students need to have this meaning to have the motivation to learn and make connections. I think without it students will not be motivated and end up frustrated that they do not enjoy school. I felt the same way. Sometimes I would read but then stop because I was not understanding. The vlogs though helped a lot once I read the comments.

  2. Hi Alessandra! I strongly agree with you that this class has been helpful to understand how our students are learning and the transitions that they are enduring during their transformative years. It is interesting how every individual learns at their own pace. I have met many students like your aunt who speak multiple languages but yet have no accent. I feel like Ortega explains this phenomenon in her text book when she talks about exceptional learners. Overall, this has been a great course and I've enjoyed watching the Vlogs and the comments as well.

    1. Hi Jessica! I find it interesting as well how everyone learns at different paces. Well not only paces but how they grasp content differently. Some things comes more easily than others like languages. Ortega (2013) talked about age and the best time to learn a language. Children tend to have an easier time than adults to learn a language. But there are some cases where adults grasp languages quickly. It helps though when you learn a language that a language that one knows has connections to. For example, Spanish and Italian have some connections that make it easier to learn if you know one of them. I agree, this has been a great course! I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

  3. It is interesting you mention that Alessandra! I also wish I could receive more training especially being able to identify students that have no accent or it is vey minimal. Although I received a lot of knowledge through this course I wish I could have been more teacher directed so that I know what I can do as a future educator. It was useful interviewing people and learning through them as well so it helped cope with not being able to do something more in depth. Just as there are different types of learners (Ortega, 2013, pg. 164). Thank you for all your insight this semester!

    1. Hi Cesia! I agree with you. I would have liked more teacher directed in the sense of knowing what steps to take. Ortega (2013) talked about the types of instruction, motivation and feedback that are necessary in the classroom. I feel though that I would have liked some tips to use this with ESL and ELL students. Although, I also did find the interview useful as well, which makes me think that only experience will teach us. I think now that we have the tools and once we are in our classroom everything will connect. Thank you for all your insight!
